My First Crystals

The History of Crystals

Crystals remind us of the structures upon which our universe is built. All matter, everything that is physical and solid, owes its existence to the organizing properties of crystals.

In all parts of the world and from the dawn of history, crystals have been regarded as belonging to the heavens, as gifts from the spirit worlds. Their colour has set them apart from everything else on earth. Today we know that the story of crystals is indeed the story of the creation of the universe. Without the constant movement of the earth’s crust many crystals would not be formed out of the sedimentary rock that lies beneath the sea.

Crystals have the power to protect, to enhance, to strengthen and to uplift. They have been used to ward off harm and can encourage virtues, as magical guardians to heal and as tools to interpret messages from the spirit world. Crystals and gemstones have a long tradition of being used for healing. There are two main ways in which they can be used.

The first is called the spiritual healing paradigm. Here crystals are used to channel, direct and amplify energy from the healer. Healing energy is mentally directed through the stone which amplifies and clarifies the healing potential. North American Indians use quartz in this way to diagnose a problem and then remove it. In this instance the crystal may or may not come into contact with the body.

The second is called the resonance placement paradigm; it does not require belief in the spirit world or any kind of energy. It relies only on the power of the crystals themselves and the healing intuition of any person. Many gemstones can be chosen for a particular benefit for the person. Placed on or around the body the stones are thought to create a resonance that encourages healing to take place.
